Image/Face claim: Henry Cavill
Name: Jim Padriac Ratigan the 2nd/ Professor James Moriarty
Gender: Male
Age: Appears to be around 31 years old-though he has lived for centuries. When He and Madeline found a way to make themselves young forever, he chose to stay a bit older than she did because he felt he looked more distinguished.
Occupation: Thief/Criminal Mastermind/Professor of Psychology and Calculus at Oxford University
Family: Father- Jim Padriac Ratigan Sr./Mother- Allison Ratigan/ Brother- Aragon Ratigan (All deceased)
Friends: Currently, James has no friends to account for. Though he is quite charming he finds it hard to get along with most people. He has acquaintances, but the only true friends he would seek would be others that would help him gain more power or riches. His best and only friend is his wife- Madeline. She is all he needs in a world that is ever-changing.
Lovers: His one and only love is his wife- Madeline Medina, aka Madame Medusa
Enemies: Sherlock Holmes, anyone who gets in his way/tries to take from him/hurts his wife.
Strengths: James is highly intelligent, but instead of using his mind for good, he uses it to create devious plans that often times harm others in the process. After many years of being a thief, he has learned to be cunning and devious. James is self-educated, and has a sharp mind that absorbs information like a sponge. He’s quite delightful to chat with if you overlook the underlying intentions of everything he does. James can admire his opponents if they are clever enough, giving credit where it is due.
He doesn’t like to act rashly and is very calculating, which is why most of his plans usually go through without problems. James carries himself as a gentleman, and treats others as such. No one could ever complain about his manners or his appearance. People wouldn’t know it, but under all his suits and education is a fierce fighter, the man is a beast under it all. For many years before he found Madeline, he travelled the world, fighting to survive. He is known to be resourceful and the type of person you go to if you need help.
Weaknesses: James is a hot head. His temper is short and his wrath is not pleasant. He has little to no mercy, so don’t bother trying to use your sob story on him. The real side of James is that he gets much enjoyment from the suffering of others, if it was from his hand. Now suffering could apply to physical or psychological depending on his mood, so watch out. It thrills him beyond belief to when he outwits someone and is the kind of person who will endlessly rub it in your face.
Being as attractive as he is, James is also very egotistical. He is often caught staring at himself in mirrors and is constantly making sure he looks good. He carried a comb in a small pocket in his jacket, and always has “back up cologne and hair product”, just in case he needs it. This can tend to be problem because sometimes he is more worried about what he looks like, than the situation at hand.
James sometimes can have illusions of grandeur and forget about the real world. In the past this was a terrible weakness for him because he was hardly ever satisfied.
Quote: “I wanted to end the world, but I’ll settle for ending yours.”
Personality: Some might say James is too smart for his own good, and those people would be fairly accurate. Sherlock Holmes himself described James best: “The man had hereditary tendencies of the most diabolical kind. A criminal strain ran in his blood, which, instead of being modified, was increased and rendered infinitely more dangerous by his extraordinary mental powers.” (Wiki) James is very charming and can be rather convincing. He uses his intellect to fool others, distracting them in many ways. What he lacks in friendliness, he makes up for in formalities.
James is fierce and cruel. He has little to no sympathy for anyone (other than his wife), and feels no remorse. His temper can be wild, and once he is set off there is no reeling him back without some sort of revenge. What is good about James is that he doesn’t ever jump into anything; always weighing out his options before striking. He tends to execute calculated revenge rather than rash, in the moment thinking. He believes his mind is a gift and must be used properly.
As a professor, James can be harsh on his students. He feels education is a gift, one he never received, and should been seen as such. His only other passion than his criminal activities is the success of his students. What they produce reflects his abilities, and he refuses to let them fail. Though most of his students are afraid to approach him, he never refuses to help. Failure is not an option if you attend his classes.
When it comes to his appearance, James is quite into himself. Sometimes it takes him longer to get ready than his wife. No matter though, he finds a man has only one chance to make an impression in life. On top of that, coming from rather meager upbringings, he enjoys lavishing in the life of luxury and likes to show off.
James never backs down from a challenge, and has an adventurous soul (if he has a soul that is). Staying around one place for too long can bore him, and he longs to travel. New experiences come with new knowledge, and he longs to learn. The more you know, the more likely you are to succeed in any endeavor.
Rare glimpses of a softer James can be seen with his wife, Madeline. Though they thrive off danger, hatred and greed, his love for her is even beyond his knowledge. People may view their relationship as strange, something that can’t be understood. James loves the dark side of his wife; nothing turns him on more than when she talks of devious schemes. But his love runs deep, and he cherishes every moment with her. They work wonderfully as a team, bouncing off of each other.
History: Born into poverty, Jim Ratigan the 2nd spent most of his childhood begging on the streets. Though his father worked hard every day of his life, he was never able to fully provide for his wife and two sons. Jim, being the oldest, was sent out to work odd and end jobs, as well as beg for measly provisions. Jim was a sharp young boy, and anyone who came across him found his wit and charm endearing enough to offer him coins or scraps of food. He was also very cunning, and found ways to steal items that his family needed. Being so small and bright, no one ever suspected him.
One day, at the age of 8, a man stumbled across Jim. This was a man of the world, and he saw potential in the eyes of the ragged boy. He offered him some advice, and gifts. The gifts were books of mathematics, literature and science. For a moment, the young boy pondered over selling the books for money, for he had no use for them. He could barely read and had no time for education. A spark inside his heart told him not to get rid of them, so he snuck them back into their home at night, hiding them among his bedding. Opening one of the books, a book of fiction, Jim began to struggle his way through the first page. Pretty soon he was half way through the book and the sun had already risen.
From that moment on, Jim sought out all the knowledge he could find. He found books in libraries and shops, stealing them when he needed to. Soon everyone knew him to be the most well-versed beggar they had ever laid eyes on, and villagers would challenge his knowledge around every corner. They delighted in what they called his “tricks”, practical applications of physics principals. He used this to his advantage, gathering in the town center and “performing” for everyone.
Soon, when Jim was old enough to leave home, he decided to travel across all of the lands in the Enchanted Forest. Bravely, he travelled alone, absorbing all the knowledge of the lands. To survive, he lied, cheated and stole his way through the land. He longed for more however, to see the worlds outside of The Enchanted Forest. He had heard of tales, but didn’t know how to reach them. Visiting many scholars and soothsayers, Jim failed to find the answer. Defeated, he attempted to drown his sorrows at a tavern. Much to his surprise, a familiar man approached him as he was drinking. It was the same man from so many years ago, the one who had given him the books as a child.
The man was not pleased at Jim’s state, thinking that his gift had no effect at all on the outcome of his life. Jim was drunk and belligerent, arguing with anyone who crossed his path and the man was disgusted. He told Jim he had come with great news for him, but could see he did not deserve this fate. After an argument, Jim was still able to articulate himself enough to convince the man he had not ruined his life.
He revealed to Jim a path he could take that would lead him to a place where he would find many treasures. The greatest treasure of them all would be his true love, something Jim had never even considered. Warning Jim, the man told him to be prepared because his love would not be who he expected. Focusing on the idea of treasure, Jim accepted this story and asked where he should go. After receiving directions, he slept off the alcohol and began his journey before the sun rose the next morning.
The way was perilous, but Jim reveled in the adventure, proudly slaying beasts and unseen enemies the whole way. As he travelled, the thought of who his true love could be entered his mind. All his life he had worried about only himself, never once thinking of love. He daydreamed of how she would be, a rare occurrence. At first his journey was motivated by riches, now he was curious as to what type of woman would ever love him, let alone be wandering out in such dangerous territory. When he reached the cave, he entered with little to no fear. He only saw the treasure inside, not the dragon hiding the corner. When she revealed herself, Jim unsheathed his sword, preparing to fight. As they circled one another, he saw something behind the dragon’s eyes that he could not explain.
Unable to explain the feeling, Jim threw down his blade, climbed a pile of rocks and kissed her on top of the forehead. He could feel something strange as his lips met her scales, a feeling strange on its own. Right before his eyes she transformed into a lovely woman, and he caught her in his arms. He was mesmerized by her gaze, and before even asking her name he kissed her long and passionately.
Much to his surprise, this dragon woman or Madeline, was as much in love with riches and power as he was. For many years, they made a marvelous team, travelling through many lands as successful thieves. Jim continued to study, becoming more intelligent as the days passed. Unfortunately, one day he made a mistake, something he promised never to do again. Lucky for him his love came to save him, their identities jeopardized.
Madeline suggested they flee to another world, landing in New Orleans. At this time, voodoo was quite popular, and Madeline began to become quite proficient in it, seeking out jewels and stones with strong magical properties. Jim was older than Madeline, and his body was unable to function as it previously had. They both realized the need for something that would give them back their youth, beauty and strength. As Jim studied, Madeline pursued a stone called the “Devil’s Eye”, meant to have powerful properties. When she returned, she revealed to Jim that the stone held the power to return their youth and keep it forever. At that moment he had never loved her more, knowing now that he could eternally be by her side, young and virile.
Soon they returned to the Enchanted Forest, with young, fresh faces. Jim had also decided to change his name, to something deserving. He also knew it would help keep his identity hidden from those who he had wronged. James Moriarty was created, and with his new name, he longed for new adventures. Madeline and he used their treasures to create beautiful jewelry, creating magnificent pieces out of stolen materials. While she focused her time and energy on production, James was tasked to travel and find interesting and new jewels and stones.
One day he stumbled across a beautiful piece of amber, which glistened in every beam of the sun. He felt drawn to this piece for reasons unknown to him. When he returned to Madeline, she wished to use the jewel in a bracelet, but James refused. Taking her hand and holding the amber in the other, he used the little magic he possessed to enchant it. James kissed his wife gently and explained that now, no matter where he travelled; they would be able to communicate with one another. A light appeared from within, and James cracked the piece in half, keeping one for himself. The light would always glow, unless the other was dead or lost in a different plain. If they thought hard enough they could also whisper words to one another, reassuring and loving words.
Though James loved his wife, he longed to travel, his mind always desperate for more knowledge. They tested out the stones on many occasions and found them to work. James had no love in his heart other than for his lovely redhead, and logic sometimes challenged him on that.
Before Regina placed her curse, James had decided to return to the Other World, there was so much there to learn. As usual, he kissed Madeline and promised to return when he was satisfied with the trip. Saddened, but knowing he would return as always, he departed, this time to England. The moment he landed in England, he felt a strange sensation. Unaware of the curse that had been placed, James began to explore this world.
James came across something called a university, which focused on teaching. Never had he seen something such as this and began to look into it all. He learned that one must require a “degree” to teach in such an establishment. Being quite resourceful, meaning using his magic, he conjured credentials to prove his intelligence. He found the whole thing preposterous; he was far more intelligent than anyone and didn’t need a paper to prove it. However, customs were customs.
Teaching wasn’t enough for James, and he began to perform small crimes throughout the city. The freedom and power was exhilarating, there was no one here that could match his wits or power. Throughout this time he barely thought of contacting his Madeline, they had spent so many years together that when years passed he hardly noticed. She was his, and they would live forever together. That was reassurance enough for him through many of his adventures.
One day, while reading, his eyes fell upon the piece of amber. Instead of glowing, it sat there surrounded by an aura of darkness. Grabbing it, he rubbed it between his fingers, hoping to spark some magic back into the stone. Unable to use the stone, he threw it down, smashing it in half. Quickly, he attempted to leave this world and head back to the Enchanted Forest, with no luck. He tried over and over until he was weary, draining a good amount of his magical energy.
The prospect of never seeing his wife again sent him into a whirlwind of anger and revenge. His crimes became more cruel, more lethal and larger in quantity. Soon he hired out a team of underlings to help him execute various plans, hoping to find some sort of magic or item he could use to assist him in finding his wife. Doing this caused much attention from the authorities, and soon James met a man equal to his wits; Sherlock Holmes.
Holmes and James fought this battle of wits for many years, always evading each other in some way or another. Though they were enemies, James thrived off their encounters, and admired Holmes although he’d never admit it. Over the years he even tried to travel out of the country to see if other points of this world would allow him entrance to his own. Every time he attempted to leave on a place, the plane malfunctioned.
On the eve of a heated battle between himself and Holmes, James had Holmes back to the wall-metaphorically speaking. Poising his gun-cane, he considered killing his arch nemesis once and for all. But where would the fun be in that? While pondering the implications, he felt a small vibration in his pocket. Looking down, gun still pointed at Holmes head, he noticed a glowing. For years he had carried the pieces of the broken stone, hoping someday it would work again. Although it was broken in two, both pieces flickered and faded.
Above all else, James had to return to his wife. He tossed a few daring remarks at Holmes, warning him he would return. Disappearing into the night, he returned to his home to gather his items. Using the pieces of stone, he knew he could track down the location of his love. He could tell she was not in the Enchanted Forest by the way they felt.
Because he had broken the stone, it caused a malfunction in locating Madeline. For a month he travelled from one state to the next before he could find her again….
Likes: James loves power, and money most of all. Though he loves his wife with all his heart, his first love comes in the forms of gold and jewels. Because he is so hungry for power, he enjoys very much being smarter than others. Any battle of wits is a challenge he will revel in. He is often found reading books of all kinds, though he prefers non-fiction. His favorite game is chess; he is rather proficient in it and is always seeking someone who can challenge him.
Unlike many men, James likes to go shopping to spend all the money he has scammed from people in various ways. Yes, he loves to buy presents for Madeline, but he also loves to buy himself clothes and accessories as well. James prides himself in his appearance and soaks in all the attention he gets for looking so sharp all of the time.
One of his most valued possessions is his cane, which is also a gun in disguise. Picture of Cane Before Madeline and he discovered a way to make themselves youthful again, he needed the assistance of a cane and found this little number in New Orleans. Currently, he only uses it for show, to make people think they know his weaknesses.
Most of all, James loves his wife. He has no eyes for anyone else, though he is often swarmed by beautiful women. He doesn’t dislike the attention, but when the women don’t get the hint, that’s when he gets annoyed.
Dislikes:
He doesn’t care for children much, he finds them to be dirty and stupid. James especially hates when they try to touch him with their grubby hands. He absolutely despises being called “Jim”, even though it is his real name. It reminds him of an old life that has long been lost. Though he appreciates technology, he doesn’t care much for cell phones.
James dislikes being told what to do and gets into a rather horrid mood when this occurs. One warning: never ask his age. He also dislikes when those far less intelligent than he is, question him. Sometimes he has to wear glasses while reading and hates how they look on him.
James does not like to “make a scene”. This mean he often bottles up any and all emotions while out in public or in front of others. He feels that these types of situations are based on quick decisions and does not care to make rash comments on anything.
